A reader's Roofs and roofing question: Ridge length?Craig Mc. from Cumnock United Kingdom had this ridge length question. Hi there bill, my question is: how to determine the length of what the ridge board is on a hipped roof?Bill's replyHi Craig,Length minus width plus one rafter thickness. The ridge timber is the full length, measured to outside of wall or wall plates, less the width. Then you add the thickness of half a rafter at each end, so that really you just add one rafter thickness. Check out the sketch here click on "marking out the ridge" at thetopof the page.
