Monitor roof

A roof with a raised extension above a ridge, the monitor that can provide provide light and ventilation to the room below.

Define: Monitor. A sketch of a small roof.

The monitor in Raffles Hotel Singapore. A fine example of great design and function. This Victorian era all glass roof would have had banks of glass louvres at the sides. Note! that the monitor is supported by a truncated hammer beam roof truss.

This monitor in a house in Darwin is purely for ventilation. The ceiling was later lined with with ply panels that had decorative cut outs to allow the hot air to be sucked out of the raised ceiling.
