In general stonemasons use a lot of tools that are fairly common to many of the building trades. Strings Lines, Plumb Bobs, Various Hammers, Spirits Levels, Trowels, Drills etc. What I will try to cover on these pages are the ones that are particular to masonry. There seems to be a growing revival in old crafts and along with it is an appreciation that some of the old ways were not too bad at all. Above is a sketch of a timber plumb level, very simply made that feature on my string line page. For one off jobs or if a spirit level is not available they still work perfectly and they never get out of true.
