Graphical Construction Glossary >> Roofs and roofing. >> collar tie

collar tie
In timber roofs a member which spans two opposite rafters, usually at mid span between the wall plate and the ridge to stop the rafters spreading under load.

sketch showing roofing terms

As the name suggests these ties help to tie the rafters together. They stop the roof from spreading. In one sense you could say that the ceiling joists also are ties and when they are fixed securely to the rafters at the wall plate then they stop the rafters from spreading at the foot.

Quite often a designer will specify short collars at the ridge and I have always been in favour of this. It is an easy and cheap way to add strength.

In line with modern practice simply making the connections with nails is not done anymore. Bolts or timber connectors are used.

collar ties in exposed roof
Ties roughly mid span on the rafters

double collar ties under ridge
A pair of ties directly under the ridge board. A nicely finished exposed roof.
