Graphical Construction Glossary >> Tools. >> Hand Tools >> Butt Gauge
Above is a rather grotty Stanley gauge. The real advantage of these tools is that when fixing doors into rebated jambs, a conventional marking gauge will not not get in close enough to the rebate. This little tool not only does that, but you can use it to set the required clearance between the door and the rebate or door stop. An additional time saver is the fact that it can mark both the depth and the width cut of the hinge, instead of using two gauges.
