As seen in the sketch above, this moulding is rebated over the the frame that it is fixed to. The reason for this is to disguise any movement in the timber panels due to expansion and contraction due to changes in humidity and the moisture content of the timber. With the use of veneered ply for door and other panels this reason is not too valid any more but we still see bolection moulds from time to time where a touch of old time feeling is needed.
