Graphical Construction Glossary >> Roofs and roofing. >> Roof Features >> valley
Directly under the roof surface intersection lies the valley rafter. The angle between two sloping roof surfaces is known as the dihedral angle. Click the link for a description of how to obtain it. In roofing this angle is better known as the hip backing angle, or the hip or valley flashing angle. In a regular roof, that is one that has the same pitch on all roof faces the two angles are identical at the hip and the valley. When the roof pitch is shallow particular care should be taken with the valley-gutter or flashing as they can cause problems with leaks inside the house.
