Graphical Construction Glossary >> Concrete and Concreting. >> >> Off Form Concrete
In the days when formwork itself was quite cheap compared to the cost of the concrete, designers used to use quite complicated caps to the column to slab joint to transfer the load. The formwork itself in the old days was usually out of rough sawn boards. Looks where not important on this 1940's suspended concrete slab because it is only about 4 feet off the ground and not normally seen. (Apart from curious web builders). The same curious website builder noticed this modern architectural effort within a couple of hundred metres from the entrance to the awe inspiring Gothic Cathedral in Cologne, Germany. After being almost totally overwhelmed by the soaring majesty of that Gothic masterwork I can honestly say that this off form concrete structure left me thinking of the word awe in another context. "Bloody awful". Of course your mileage may vary. If you didn't find exactly what you are looking for try this search tool that will search the site and the web.
